Planning/Production Engineering Design/Manufacturing EngineeringThis study, the basis of mechanical engineering seeking System Realization Technology, conducts education and research based on innovative engineering to lead the academic and industrial world. Its applied engineering area also deals with core technology to develop new future technology.
This area includes high tech production technology including Macro/Micro/Nano system production technology, steel making, polymers, composite materials, and intelligent structure manufacturing processes. The designs of interest in the global arena are related to innovative design and engineering using traditional mechanical engineering mechanics and analysis methods.
Such research results are applied to IT, BT, and NT to create converging technology. In addition, the eco-design research is in a quickening period as an important future technology.
Biomechanical EngineeringBiomechanical Engineering uses the basis of mechanical engineering to conduct education and research necessary for various medical fields and focuses on interdisciplinary research between the academic and industrial worlds.
As there is a growing need for high value-added industry due to the domestic high-tech industry, the nation is investing more in medical engineering, which is the study of using technology development through engineering methods, basic medicine, and clinical medicine to define, analyze and solve human body-related challenges. The Department of Mechanical Engineering tries to go beyond the existing medical engineering by converging traditional medical engineering with micro/NANO technology and molecular/cell engineering and developing bio Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems, NANO bio, bio sensors, artificial organs, diagnostic apparatus, systems engineering, drug evaluation equipment, and robot-bionic interfaces.
This allows us to educate future-oriented talent who can conduct interdisciplinary research based on mechanical engineering. To achieve this, we are actively working together with research staff in and out of the school.
Thermal Fluid/EnergyThermal Fluid/Energy is based on thermal mechanics, fluid mechanics, heat/material transfer, and combustion. Is also includes energy conversion/transfer/use systems, fluid machinery, carriers, environmental system, bionic/medical systems, production manufacturing processes, and ocean systems. It also conducts research on new technology development to tackle energy/environmental issues that are on the rise recently.
To achieve this, this area develops highly efficient energy technology including power plants, future vehicles, and micro energy systems and secures core technology required to realize renewable energy systems including: wind power, nuclear power and hydrogen fuel cells. Plus, Thermal Fluid/Energy strengthens microscopic/analytic perspective education by activating applicable research on Micro/Nano technology and biomedical systems.
RoboticsRecently, the global robot search is heading toward Intelligent Service Robots. The robot intelligence research that the Department of Mechanical Engineering deals with includes intelligent moving technology, surgical robots, undersea robots as well as the design and control of robot arms and hands. With the help of the Pohang Intelligent Robot Research Institute, the only robot specialized research institute in Korea, we are working on national and industrial tasks.
We are also conducting Bio-Robot research with a synergy effect on the biomechanical area, which is a focus of the Department of Mechanical Engineering. Plus, robots can be applied to system integration, energy and environmental areas. Above this, we are running blue ocean high skilled manpower businesses to educate those from robot industrial fields and operating the Undersea Robot Laboratory and the Unmanned Specialized center for ADD National Defense.
