Meaasge from the Head
Future leaders of science and technology, welcome to the Department of Mechanical Engineering at POSTECH.
Since welcoming its first undergraduate class in 1987 and launching its graduate programs the following year, our department has upheld the core value of cultivating a select group of outstanding talents. Over the decades, we have led mechanical engineering education and research in Korea. Building on the strength of our accumulated achievements in teaching and research, we now stand alongside the world’s leading universities as a globally top-tier academic community.
As of 2026, our department is home to a total of 254 students, including 48 undergraduate students, 46 master’s students, 38 doctoral students, and 122 integrated M.S./Ph.D. students. Together with 26 faculty members, 13 researchers, and 8 administrative staff, we work closely in pursuit of excellence in education and research. This highly collaborative and focused academic environment is one of our department’s defining strengths.
In particular, we are exploring new frontiers in key fields that will shape the future, including micro- and nano-engineering, biohealth, robotics·control·mobility and Physical AI, thermal-fluid sciences and energy, and aerospace engineering. Our research already competes with the world’s leading research groups, driving the next wave of technological and industrial transformation.
Our students do far more than simply acquire knowledge. They ask questions, embrace challenges, and create new paths for themselves. Many of our undergraduate graduates, driven by strong academic passion and potential, continue on to prestigious graduate programs in Korea and abroad, including at POSTECH. Our graduate alumni go on to become leaders of change in universities, national research institutes, global corporations, and entrepreneurial ventures around the world.
With an undergraduate faculty-to-student ratio of 1.7:1 and a graduate ratio of 9.7:1, we provide an intensive educational environment. Comprehensive scholarship opportunities, systematic personalized advising programs, state-of-the-art research infrastructure, and close interaction with world-class faculty all provide the foundation for students to surpass their own limits while developing both academic depth and creativity.
The Department of Mechanical Engineering at POSTECH offers the most challenging yet most solid foundation for future leaders who aspire to shape technology and society. We look forward to welcoming you to a place where your potential becomes reality, and to building the future together.
Thank You
Dong Sung Kim, Head of the Department
