Our lab is deals with studies that understand and utilize the mechanism of large deformation and mechanical instability of various solid structures and the change of physical properties of smart materials. Tabletop scale experiments, finite element simulations, and theoretical analysis of nonlinear deformation and residual stresses of structures are conducted, and researches are conducted to apply them to the development of soft actuators and sensors.
MAJOR RESEARCH ACHIEVEMENTS
- Development of fabrication techniques of thin elastic shells
- First demonstration of imperfection sensitivity of shell buckling
- Development of shells with dynamically tunable strength
RESEARCH INTERESTS
- Mechanical instability of thin structures
- Morphable structures
- Fluid-solid interaction (FSI)
